Assignment 1: Observing Children: Knowing The Full measure of Students

FIRST STUDENT

·         The Child Name (Pseudonym): Maddi Jane
·         Grade: 5th

I walked to the class and find my self confused to decide which student is worth my observation. As I finally sit in one of the chair at behind, I did not directly found ‘that one student’ but already have some candidates. Until the time of class started, all of the students prayed devoutly in Muslim way except that one student who did not wear hijab like the other female students. Then I knew who to observe.

She is Maddi Jane (Pseudonym). She is the minority. Not only her religion is different with another, but also her acts. I found her last name in her right hand written goodly with pen. At first I thought it was tattoo. There was a tumblr in her table; tosca coloured and looks elegant than the other tumblr. There was a transparent coloured glasses covered her eyes. And the curly hair with pony tail in her head.
She is different. When everybody was wondering who I am -the one who sit behind with a yellow binder and pencil- she did not even look at me. She is busy with her sophisticated correction pen and the book that she hid in her table. Then I found out that the book was a comic. But there was another book too, that was an unfinished drawing. She choosed to do that draw when her teacher was teaching. It is continued until the first break. She stayed at her chair instead of go outside the class.
When the usual class-time, she once went outside the class under the teacher’s permission accompanied by one of her friend. When the free-class come, she stayed at chair reading a book while another students walking and laughing each other making noise. Instead, she talked to the one who sit beside her. Once she put the tie on her mouth. Once she played the rubber silently. Until the end of the first day, I could still see the tattoo-alike with her last name in it placed in her right hand.
On the second day, the teacher did not come to the class. It was Pramuka day that every students wore Pramuka uniform. I still stared at Maddi Jane. When I entered the class, I found her sitting on the floor making an assignment with one of her friend. Instead of making it on her own table, she choosed that way. Whereas, the floor was the floor without carpet. Then I saw her tumblr; the previous day it was only one and that day it was two. Because of the free time of the class, every student excitingly came to me. They asked some of the question. Maddi Jane did it too, she asked for my instagram account. She also talked about Fur Elise –piano instrument by Beethoven-  to me. She said that she used to play piano, but the piano was broken. I found the fact that she is actually not that quite. She is more active than day 1. And I could see her right hand was spoiled with blue crayon.
The day three had come, I found her argued with the friend who sit beside her. Like the previous 2 day, I could see the tattoo-alike in her right hand written her last name in it. She did not bring shawl for the dance assignment. While the teacher was teaching, once she drank her drinks. But then she secretly read comic, but not for quite long time. She continued with her own world. Then I could see she wrote ‘’I’m Broken’’  in the last page of her book. Once the teacher asked her “Maddi Jane, what are you doing?” then she replied “Nothing, Miss’’.
The fourth day was the gymnastic day at the morning. She wore sport uniform. After the gymnastic, most the half student of the class change their uniform into Batik but she did not. She went to the canteen alone before the class started. Once the class Shalawatan, she did not join. Once she put her head in the table. Once she sent a paper to her friend and her friend replied. I saw a handsign in her shoes. At the beginning of this day, she offered me to sit beside her. Such a good point in the last day for me to observe her.

SECOND STUDENT

·         The Child Name (Pseudonym): James Arthur
·         Grade: 2nd

I found my self excitingly entered the 2nd grader. I had to make a new observation with a new student. As the previous week, I still got a little confused to choose who to observe. Until I randomly decide a boy named James Arthur.
A glance, he is did not look different with his friends. But then I joined the class and observed him and got much surprised from him.  It was the sport class at Monday morning. He played football with his friends. After football, they had Gymnastic. He is the center. Once he was joking with his teacher and the teacher laughed along. At class, he made his assignment. Randomly, he sang a song with his friends. Then the teacher asked them to stop. Sometimes he used ruller to do his assignmet. Randomly, he loose his shoes. The teacher came to his table and clap his table. Next, he continued his assignment while putting his head on the table. He threw his friend’s book to the floor. Again, the teacher came to his table and asked him to stop. Over all of those things, he finised his assignment when the other friends is still on the process. He said ‘’yeaay’’ once he finised and submitted it to the teacher.
Second day. He did not wear his tie while the others do. He was making assignment while some of his friend surrounded him. He once took his foot to chair, take a look at his friend’s task, started talking and laughing but keep continue with his own task. Once the teacher scream to a student, he duplicated his teacher’s face. Once he reported his friend to his teacher because of his friend wrote at the table. Randomly after that, he walked to his friends table, putting a book in his head. He played a game named ‘’disuruh-suruh’’ with his friends, made a whisper and sometimes looked at me. At the end of the class, he finished the assignment while their friends do not, so he went home earlier.
It is the next day of second observation and I saw a house-alike in his table once I entered the class. He made the house-alike with two tumblr, a pencil, and a ruller. Then, he did his assignment with his thinker face. Once he walked to his friend’s chair to see his friend’s assignment. He discussed the assignment with that friends, and having a little debate on it. When he cameback to his chair, he randomly sang ‘’Harusnya aku yang disana..’’ with some of his friends near him. But then the teacher yelled his name. He stopped singing. He ate bubble gum and once played his hat. Once the teacher held a ‘’Tepuk Semangat’’ and also Asmaul Husna and he joined it with a loud voice. At the end of that day, as usual, he finished his assignment early than his friends.
Finally, the last day of my observation. He made his assignment while standing instead of sitting. He then randomly sang ‘’Waka waka..’’ with some of his friends near him. Once he walked to his friends table and put a ruller on the side and played the ruller up and down. And then, I saw him making his assignment while one of his foot on the chair. Once The teacher held the singing time, he was busy with his things like pen, pencil, sticks, while the other was singing ‘’Kalau kau senang hati..’’ Evenmore, he threw some sticks to his friend near him. Overall, I could seriously think that he is such a diligent and smart student in this class even he made some noises sometimes.

THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FIRST STUDENT AND SECOND STUDENT

I have observed two students and ofcourse they have some similarities. For example the way the first and the second student do they assignment is the same as the way elementary schools do. They have the souls of elementary students inside them. The immaturity, and some of the way they solve the problem.
Beside, the have differences more than the similarities. Like the first student is more mature than the second student. The second student is really present how child alike. Meanwhile the first student is not take a long time to soon to be a teenager. The first student also more calm than the second one.

My Own Experience
  •       Teaching is a life calling from the bottom of the heart
  •       Teaching is changing something bad into something good

  •       Teaching is a life calling, so that is one of the reason why teaching
  •       Teaching is so close with human activity, the simple example is when our parents is teacher, we may want to be a teacher too, so that is one of the reason why teaching
  •       Teaching is not only beneficial for the world life but also for hereafter. With teaching, we transform the knowledge, and the knowledge then change someone’s life. We could gain reward from God if the knowledge still adapted. Imagine if we are a teaching, that would be so relatable.
  •       Teaching meets the teacher a lot of experience from various background and change something in it
  •       The teacher nowadays is goodly paid

  •       Teaching is respectable, meaningful and relevant
  •       Teaching is a wonderful calling
  •       Teacher is world-changing work

As my own experience, the why teaching question is worth some reason. We have to teach because the education should be developed and transformed. Education is the key, so that it would make a change. In addition, teaching is a honorable occupation so actually there is no reason not to be  a teacher. And also, nowadays teacher’s life is not as badly paid as the formerly time.

My Own Experience
  • Teacher is adly paid
  • Being teacher is not an easy thing that not everyone is ready to do that
  • Teacher used to be underestimated by people

  • Generally people prefer to work in a flexible job. Teaching is the kind of job that is followed the schedule, we could say it is strick.
  • Not everyone have the natural skill to teach. Some of the peoples is really not knowing how to even explain something to another.
  •       There is still an assumption about teacher is badly paid.

  • Teachers are badly paid, so badly that it is a national degrace
  • Teacher suffer low status in many communities
  • Teacher often work under difficult situation, under impossible condition
  • The complexity of teaching can be excruciating

In my own experience, I often heard the reason not to teach because it is not interesting. There is more interesting and popular job people want to be, like doctor, engineer, nurse, police, and so on. In addition as what I’ve experience, teaching is too ordinary. People nowadays is want to be something big and extraordinary whatever it is. And also, not everyone is capable to teach. Last, the lower level of teaching is ususally badly paid.
